The Office of Corporate Relations is looking for two students to be Social Media Content Producers. It is a part-time position.

Responsibilities

Students selected will be expected to contribute and post content on social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter in different formats regularly, as well as monitor NUS-related news on Facebook, Twitter and the Web.

Requirements

1. Current NUS students preferred.

2. Proficient in English and have good interpersonal skills

3. Comfortable with using social media platforms, and preferably be an existing user

4. Be in-the-know on the activities and buzz on campus

5. Possess a good sense of the type of content appropriate for public release

6. Commit about an hour daily to go online on Facebook, Twitter and the Web, and meet up weekly for planning, updates and feedback.

Alumni Mentorship Night 2010 - 15 September

Following the success of the inaugural Alumni Mentorship Evening in April this year, the NUS Career Centre and Office of Alumni Relations partnered again to invite NUS alumni to share with students their career journey and experiences in the working world.

Nine distinguished alumni who are now established professionals in their respective fields (Journalism, Human Resource, Business Consultancy, Business Development, Engineering, Dentistry, Marketing and Advertising) mentored and networked with 46 students, in a speed dating format, over a 3 course scrumptious dinner on 15 September.

Speaker for the night, Mr Yeo Keng Joon (Managing Partner of Global Biotech Singapore), shared insights on his business ventures as well as the importance of Networking and Giving.

The main objective of this outreach campaign is to impress upon students the importance of early career preparation.

The first step to career preparation is simply to “Know Yourself”.

You may think “That is so obvious! Why do I have to specifically ‘Know Myself’?”

Contrary to that, many students, in fact many people don’t know enough about themselves to maximize their potential.

Understanding your strengths and weaknesses & what you enjoy/dread doing can help you to evaluate the suitability of your career options more effectively.

There’s an old saying: Find a job you love and you will never work a day!

Well, of course in reality, you are bound to love something about your job but hate another thing about it. However, ultimately, you must enjoy most of what you do.

So it’s time to discover the extraordinary in you: Start by increasing your self-awareness - constantly do self-reflections. In addition, find out from other people (close friends/parents/siblings): what do they think you are best at doing/ worst at doing > are their responses similar as/different from what you have expected? Is there a side of you that you have overlooked but others have picked up?

Do also spend some time to think about your career goals – start developing some short term goals and slowly work towards your long term goals.

Banking & Finance Networking Event 2010

The turnout for the Banking and Finance Networking event on August 25 was overwhelming.

This inaugural banking and finance networking session organized by the NUS Career Centre in partnership with the Bank of Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital and Citibank had its focus on the middle and backend office positions rather than the front office positions.

There is actually much more to a bank than trading. Behind every deal, there are many vital departments which ensure that the banks can operate efficiently

>> simply put, IT professionals and engineers are crucial to drive the banks’ main operations –Just how inconvenient it was when the POSB/DBS online banking and ATM services were down a few months ago.

If you are interested to join the technology and operations departments in the banks but had missed out the banking and finance networking event, no worries! There will be another two technology and operations panel sessions by Barclays. Register early to avoid disappointment as seats are limited.

NUS CELC is recruiting up to 10 female part-timers

Job Title : Conversation Partners (Part Time)

Responsibilities:

NUS Centre for English Language Communication (CELC) is seeking up to 10 Part Timers to serve as Conversation Partners to 5 Female Science Postgraduates from Saudi Arabia (1 to be attached to each student) who are attending an Intensive English Course from CELC. These students are able to communicate in simple English (Upper Primary level), but lack confidence and topic-specific vocabulary. They are all from a conservative Muslim background.

Conversation topics and prompts would be provided initially, but the Conversation Partners should branch out into topics of general interest such as their family (some of the Saudi students are married); their goals and aspirations; tertiary education topics; career plans; research interests; fashion, shopping; cooking, etc. The focus of each session is to hold a sustained conversation/ oral interaction in English. Conversation Partners will maintain a record of their activities and submit a brief report on the student’s progress every 5 weeks.

Requirements:

The ideal Conversation Partner should be:

- Female, preferably postgraduate students from the Science Faculty, but students from other faculties will be considered
- Proficient in English, communicative with good interpersonal skills
- Able to commit to the programme every Tuesday and Thursday from 2 to 3 pm. In addition the partners will post comments on the students’ blogs and discuss some of the issues highlighted in their blogs. In all the Conversation Partners should be able to commit 3 hours a week (i.e. 2 hours face-to-face contact, and an hour online). The programme will run in two phases: the first from 19 July to 24 September and the other from 4 October to 10 December.

Compensation:

Each Conversation Partner will be paid a nominal sum of $10 per hour (regardless of whether this is face to face or online contact) for her effort and a brief progress report must be submitted every 5 weeks.

Candidates will need to be interviewed to assess their suitability as Conversation Partners.

Outstanding job seekers bagged job offers on the spot

SINGAPORE: Job seekers flocked to the NUS JobsConnect 2010 on 25 May, wanting to give a shot at the 800 over job vacancies showcased at the event.

The NUS JobsConnect is an annual on-campus interview and networking event organized by the NUS Career Centre to assist NUS graduates in their job search. This year, the event sees 58 companies from both the public and private sectors across various industries such as banking & finance, engineering, IT, food & beverage and public service participating.

From as early as 9am, crowd swelled at the registration booth- one hour before the event even started. Some 900 job seekers were then seen surging into the NUS multi-purpose sport halls, networking with employers and seeking career advices from the NUS Career Centre’s career consultants.

Miss Ngyen Thi Ngoc, an NUS Business Management graduate, was among those who had visited the NUS JobsConnect 2010. “I really like the concept of mass on-campus interview and networking session. It’s a good and convenient platform to bring together employers and job seekers,” she said.

Mr Wong Chu Wee of participating employer, IM Flash Singapore, LLP, also gave JobsConnect a thumbs-up. “The response’s very good. We have shortlisted quite a few of candidates for interviews and job offers.”

According to IM Flash Singapore, LLP, several candidates had been offered a place in the company on that day. Besides this, the company is having mass interviews in the premises.

Mechanical Engineering graduate, Mr Ee Song, was one of the outstanding candidates who had been offered a position with IM Flash Singapore, LLP. He expressed positive views about the event and appreciated the employers’ enthusiasm and eagerness in the recruitment drive.

“The turn up rate for the event was really good. The employers were also very enthusiastic when I approached them, “he said.

NUS JobsConnect is a major crowd puller not only because of the interview and networking opportunities, but also for the NUS Career Centre’s free resume critique session and one-to-one career advisory service that are available. Novelty booth like that of Handwriting Analysis also drew in huge crowd, with curious onlookers forming a beeline to find out how handwriting reveals one’s personality and how to apply it for career success.

NUS JobsConnect was first organized in 2009 when tough job market took its toll on graduates due to the global financial crisis. Despite industry players’ optimistic views of the current job market, job hunting remains tough for fresh graduates, as their inexperience is often a deterrent for employers. Hence, the NUS Career Centre would continue its effort in easing NUS undergraduates/graduates’ job searching process.

The NUS Career Centre is organising the second run of NUS JobsConnect, an on-campus interview and networking event. With 57 participating companies and over 800 jobs waiting to be filled, this will be the recruitment event to be at this May! The event will be held on Tue, 25 May @ MPSH1.

Prior to the event, graduates are stongly encouraged to deposit their resume online, apply to any of the 57 companies and secure an opportunity to be interviewed at the event. Alternatively, gradautes are welcome to walk-in during the later part of the event (12noon onwards) and network with recruiters. It would be an opportunity to leave a positive impression on recruiters and bag an interview on the spot.

NUS Alumni Mentorship Evening 2010 Part1

It was the first of its kind networking event that brought our very own high-flying NUS Alumni and students together over a scrumptious 3 course dinner. The 8 AlumNUS that came back are professionals that are well established in their respective fields and very eager to share with our students about their success stories and to answer any budding questions that the students have for them.

It was a very interactive session where the Alumni mentors rotated around the 9 tables to chat with participating students and name cards, laughters as well as inspirational ideas were shared. Some of the students were so enthusiastic that they stayed back well after the event ended to continue chatting with some of the Alumni mentors and our gracious AlumNUS was kind enough to oblige them.

All in all, it was a very lively and interactive event that saw happy faces come and go in a blink of an evening. There were good food, exciting company and even an inspirational talk on Creativity by our guest speaker Fredrik Haren, founder of Interesting.org. So what exactly do employers look for in a global talent? Well, we conducted a survey with our database of employer in 2008 and 2009 to find out. The top 5 attributes they look out for in an individual include emotional intelligence, having a global orientation or mindset, participation in overseas Internship, participation in overseas programme such as student exchange and community projects and the ability to manage diversity at work.

Anyway, we developed the SBF-NUS Global Internship & Mentorship Programme (or GIM for short) to provide students with an opportunity to be attached to companies with regional or global operations. Unlike regular internships, the GIM Programme requires participating companies to provide students with work that requires interaction with regional or global counterparts in the company they are attached to. In addition, a mentor from the company will also be identified to provide students with additional career and business perspectives.

The Discovery Cafe!

If you are reading this right now, chances are you would have found out about this blog through our Discovery Cafe!

Our first ever campus wide NUS Career Centre roadshow has just ended with a bang and for those of you who didn't had the luxury of time to come catch us at our booths, don't worry, there are pictures for you below.

It has been a fun two weeks while the roadshow lasted, the NUSCC staff was all over campus reaching out to students and helping them discover their career interests and exploring possible career paths according to their interests. Students from all faculties flocked to our counters, eagerly filling up the the interests assessment forms and reading about their respective RIASEC codes. Refreshments was also provided to the students as they chitter chatter away with our NUSCC staff as well as our Career Guides who came to lend a helping hand.

My personal favourite is actually the very interesting photo stands we had where students can take a polaroid picture and paste it up on the photo stands together with people of the same RIASEC codes. The photo stands have been relocated to the NUS Career Centre, so if you want to catch a glimpse of the people that have been part of this momentous event, hop on by!

Career Guide Sharing Session

It was another first of its kind here at NUS Career Centre when our Career Guides had their first 'Career Guides Sharing Session' as part of the recruitment drive to uncover passionate young NUS undergraduates to join the Career Guides family, and a ROARING success at that! More than 40 people showed up to learn more about what it means to be a Career Guide, which was more than the 28 that actually RSVP-ed.

The sharing session began with an awesomely well crafted video done by none other than our very own senior Career Guide, Guang Si, that kicked started the event on a high. I could see the spark of interest in each and everyone of the over 40 attendees that turned up. After the video, Fun Man and Guang Si took turns to explain to them what being a Career Guide entails and the commitments that they would have to fork out. The 'corporate' presentation ended with all the attendees raring to ask very detailed questions which meant that they have been all ears during the presentation and have seriously considered the commitment level of being a Career Guide and how to intergrate it into their own schedules.

Drinks and food came last as the attendees had a chance to mingle with our Career Guides as well as the Career Advisors who were present to give support to the event. Amidst the chomping of donuts and slurping of packet drinks, some of the very interested attendees even expressed their concerns that they may not be selected as Career Guides due to the overwhelming responses.

Vestas Recruitment Talk

Had the honour of attending one of our recruitment talks this afternoon, we had Vestas, No. 1 in Modern Energy, come down to our Engineering heartland to give a warm opening presentation to the students on what they do and to also share with them the history of Vestas and their vision of propelling wind energy to at least 20% of the world fuel resource consumption.

It was a lighthearted event spearheaded by Kei Mizuno, Graduate Programme Recruiter from Vestas, and the entourage of Vestas executives were there to mingle with our engineering students after the presentation. Below are our students and the good people from Vestas in action.

As the days steadily depletes from your holiday reserves, can you smell the sweet beckoning scent of the campus calling out to you? Not that its a bad thing, I know of some who can’t wait for the new semester to start. New modules, new faces, new adventures. What exciting challenges await in the days to come.

The constant cheering and hollering which can be heard all over campus indicates that orientation camps are taking place. It is always nice to see young enthusiastic undergrads rah-rah-ing (did you know this term evolved from hurrah) and having a blast going through their rites of passage.

New Faces

And so the story goes, the NUS Career Centre has added a whole bunch of new people ranging from Career Advisors to Marcomm Exec, and like all 'fresh meat', they must go for orientation as well (and you think only students have orientation camps); but of course, its not an over-night orientation camp, just a walk around the neighbourhood to familiarise themselves with the various OSA (for the uninitiated, Office of Student Affairs) departments and to allow the other OSA colleagues to meet the new blood.

Heavyhearted Goodbyes and Warm Hellos

The centre and the rest of OSA was treated to a scrumptious spread for lunch today! Its to celebrate the disembarkation of our dear Ms Wong Sing Chee, who has founded and headed the NUSCC till late last year. Ms Wong is leaving the centre for greater things to come in her life.

Where ever your travels may take you Ms Wong, take comfort that you will be in our thoughts, and a part of us however small, will always be with you in your journeys ahead.

On a lighter note, the lunch was also to welcome all the newbies within OSA, bulk of which comes from NUSCC. The whole affair was light hearted and good food is always a good thing to have, Dean and Vice Dean came round to mingle with us and we all had to put on our best behavior a good chat with the dynamic duo.

Of course I was running around snapping up pictures, the unofficial paparazzi of NUSCC, I managed to capture quite a few gems (look out for the hug from Vice Dean to Ms Wong) before the event came to an end and everyone headed back to their hole to finish up their day.

Radio Pulze

Just had a good chat with the people from Radio Pulze, the on-campus radio station (the one and only) that started all the way back in 2002, and realised that they actually have quite a variety of services available and are doing some seriously interesting stuff.

Collaborations are definitely in talks right now and we here at Career Centre look forward to this breathe of fresh air as the hatching of the next semester is round the bend. So probably next semester, you can look forward to informative, bite-sized advice right from the comfort of a speaker near you.

First Job Handling 101

Should you Step out or continue Studying?

Enter the workforce? Or, stay in school to pursue a higher degree? It is a classic dilemma budging many fresh graduates.

With an array of factors to consider and an increasingly competitive labor market in a downward spiralling economy, making the correct choice is a daunting task indeed.

But, all is not lost if you do some soul-searching and seriously consider your needs and options. You do not want to make a choice you would regret later in life.

Pros & Cons: Step' Out

Competition

Think. Do you have a distinct advantage that will help you stay ahead of the competition? Keep in mind you will be competing with tons of similar Others.

Lower pay

Be prepared to accept lower pay as compared to your counterparts if your paper qualifications aren't exactly striking

Poorer prospects

Promotions will come slower, especially in specialized elitest fields such as senior positions in the civil service. But if you have strong co-cirrcular records or an advantage in other fields, or a great attitude & personality, you can consider joining the workforce earlier.

Getting a Headstart

In other fields such as engineering & marketing , practical experience is more highly valued than paper qualifications. It really depends on the industry.

A Good fit

Starting early affords you more time to gauge if you are in the right industry and more importantly, doing work that you are passionate about. It offers you more time to make a career switch midway.

Prons & Cons: Boosting that qualification

Lack of relevant working experience

A deficiency in practical knowledge may set you back, making you less valuable than the candidate who has gained some working experience. Go for internships. Certain MBA programmes require candidates with at least 3 years of working experience.

Commitment

Academic excellence requires focus, passion, time and money. Lacking in one of these may result in a sub-standard qualification.

Higher starting salary

Master's degree holders can expect to draw a higher salary in recognition of their advanced qualifications.

Academic value

If you're bent on academia and R&D, a recognized master's degree will you a leg up. It may also give you greater leverage when applying for jobs.

Whatever your decision, it is a highly personal one so avoid being influenced by friends in the process. Regardless of your choice, stick to it once you mind is made up.

The Cardinal Sins of Job Interviews

1. Do not make personal remarks

A little informality can break the ice but know where to draw the line. It's important to keep the conversation on a strictly professional footing.

2. Do not criticize yourself

Being overly humble will never convince the that are the one for the job. If you do not believe in yourself, who would? Remember that interviews are all about personal branding. Phrase your words into positive statements and exudes confidence.

3. Do not lie

The world is small. You never know when your little lie will catch up with you. It's all too simple for your interviewers to verify things with today's communication technologies.

4. Do not use Singlish

Speak up and speak the best you can. There is no need for slang but you shouldn't give your prospective employer an excuse to write you off on the grounds of incomprehensibility.

5. Do not be late

Not being punctual shows that you do not care enough about the job to at least arrive on time. Set out early and give yourself ample time to reach and find the location. Remember Murphy's law. Have the decency to contact the interviewer as soon as you know that you are unable to make it on time and arrange for another appointment if possible.

6. Do not give a limp handshake

Shake hands firmly and look the interviewer in the eye as you do so. But note, firmly does not mean to crush the interviewer's hand. A limp handshake reflects poor self-esteem.

7. Do not broach the $subject

You are anxious but always let the interviewer broach the subject. Or, negotiate the terms only when you are being offered the position. Doing otherwise shows that you are a moneygrubber.

8. Do not be arrogant

As a fresh graduate, it is understandable that you feel you have everything ahead of you. But, that doesn't mean you will get the job you applied for. Moreover, you lack the experience. So be confident and show respect for others who most likely have more experience that you do.

9. Do not touch you phone

It is plain rude and shows that you are not respecting your interviewer if you take calls or text messages in the middle of an interview. It should be on silent mode or even off and out of sight.

10. Do not avoid eye contact

Eye contact is important but it's crucial not to stare at the interviewer. Look the interviewer in the eye when acknowledging his questions but do look away politely thereafter. Do not engage in a staring match. Practice looking and looking away.

These talks aim to reflect the realities of the current employment market. Ms Corrine Ong, Director of NUS Career Center shared with us her views on the employment outlook for the year ahead.

In economic downtimes like the present, the NUS Career Center is pushing new initiatives to address the employment needs of NUS Students. Ms Cammie Tan, Career Consultant from the NUS Career Centre gives us an overview of this year's exciting happenings and also provides vital tips o help you prepare for the Career Fair.
